Week 9: Media arts Workshop 1

In the Media arts workshop this week, we focused on preproduction and production as making processes. As fundamental elements of Media arts, we explored composition, time, space, sound, movement and lighting to communicate story principles. These elements of Media arts assist media producers on creating different effects in their works for different purposes. For example, darkness and silence of sound are used frequently in horror movies to create the atmosphere of fear and make audience share the imaginary experience with the character. Then based on the concepts of the elements, we further explored some basic strategies we could use in our film, such as the uses of Rule of Thirds, movement, perspective and different camera shooting angles. The technique I am interested in is the Rule of Thirds, which would be explained below:

The grids in the photograph divide into nine parts. And in tutorial, we did an exercise with cardboard frames to ‘understand that photographers make decisions about which key parts within a frame’(Gibson&Ewing, p.98). Therefore, we noticed that the four crosses in the middle are usually used for emphasizing. Then this reminds me how parents taught me to use fingers and make a frame when I was little. This must be a starting point to recognize framing and emphasizing in vision.Teachers would be recommended to teach students framing with fingers so that students could understand this technique of camera shooting and the use of this strategy in real life. In our film production later, we could use the Rule of Thirds to arrange puppets and setting as well as make an emphasis.
