Week 11 Media arts Workshop 2

As the second last week of this semester, the focus of this week is production and post-production as film making processes. Through filming, students were expected to explore technical and symbolic elements in post-production. 

The whole process of film production took our group six hours to complete. First we considered the setting of the main scene and as the genre of the film is modified to be suspense, the main scene in the Pig’s apartment was taken in a dark room with light focused at the center. The reason for this was light ad shadows can ‘create mood, draw audience attention to a specific area, modify shape and create a 3rd dimension or bring out texture in an object’ (Jefferson, 2013). For the main scene, as we used differences of light to create the atmosphere of suspense and intention, we also use the light from torches for Pig’s body guards’ shadow puppets so that the shadow would look larger and more powerful. Then as the Pig would question the Wolf and show the attitude of doubt, the camera angle was decided to be close-up to make audience have a direct eye-contact with the Pig.

To film other scenes, the outside of this ‘luxury modern apartment’ used the Law building in University of Sydney Camperdown campus with a long shot, which is made by glass and stylish. Then in the scene when the wolf trying to persuade the Pig, the puppet of the wolf was filmed from inside of a door as the wolf was locked outside the room. By filming this section, we used the Rule of Thirds to make audience focused on the window on the door and the Wolf, which was on right hand-side of the image. For my part, we filmed at the bush outside of Manning House. Then after all scenes were finished, our group completed post-production, which included film editing and sound effect editing.
