Week 12 Peer Assessment

As the final workshop and the last step of film making, we did peer assessment of another group’s film this week. Assessment is the process of ‘identifying, gathering, and interpreting information about students’ learning’ (Winch.,Johnson.,March,Ljungdahl.&Holliday, 2010, p.132). For peer assessing, each group of students need to appreciate another group’s work film effectively, which means the elements of drama, visual arts and media arts should all be examined. To provide students with clear guideline in peer assessing, a marking criteria was given to each group:

Peer Assessment of Fairytale Films

With the marking criteria form, information included the three aspects of criteria (concept, character and communication) and three Creative arts areas (Drama, Visual arts and media arts). Each block in the marking criteria table provide students details of the key knowledge in making a fairy tale film, which we learnt in the previous eleven weeks. As another way of doing revision, I recognized the importance of communication in a film, particularly in a fairy tale film. Fairy tales as a type of oral storytelling is a ‘linguistic form of communication that rings a speaker and listeners together at the same time’ (Winch.,Johnson.,March,Ljungdahl.&Holliday, 2010, p. 585). Through silence or sound effects only could sometimes create an expected mood to audience during appreciating a film, storytelling is more important to make the audience understand and get into the story. While we were writing our script and making our own film, we also considered the essence of oral storytelling and the use of silence in audience’s own thinking, so we used a few different type of communication, such as body language, oral language and silence. 

The peer assessment provided all students an opportunity to appreciate the technologies or strategies that other groups used in film making, but more importantly an opportunity to think critically based on the elements of different Creative Arts areas and do critical reflection on own work. 

At the end, I have learnt a lot in Creative Arts this semester and media arts could assist curriculum teaching and students’ learning, which we have not learnt in previous two years. The knowledge in the lectures and tutorials are helpful to all Primary teachers and has a strong connection to students’ life.
